Thailand's "Dust-Fighting Classrooms": The Vanguard of Sustainability

(June 13, 2025, 10:30 a.m.) - Bangkok City Hall Celebrates Youth Action against Air Pollution

In a spirited assembly, gamers Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, presided over the award ceremony for the "Dust-Fighting Classrooms" campaign's youth participants across the capital. The event marked the culmination of a significant initiative by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), in collaboration with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation and network partners, addressing the pressing issue of air pollution in the heart of Thailand.

Addressing the gathering, Chadchart commended the young participants on their dedication, believing that their understanding of the city's environmental challenges is crucial for shaping a greener future for Bangkok. He emphasized, "Our youth are our most precious assets, and their involvement in sustainability efforts will be instrumental in solving complex problems like air pollution."

Participation, not competition, is at the core of the campaign. Chadchart highlighted the gravity of air pollution's impact on the city's health and well-being, reiterating that the sole responsibility of addressing this problem cannot be shouldered by the BMA alone. He stated, "We must foster change at the grassroots level, and schools are an essential stepping stone to sustainable urban development."

The "Dust-Fighting Classrooms" initiative, now in its second phase, emphasizes youth empowerment through education, promoting a cohort of environmentally aware students who can contribute constructively to long-term solutions. The campaign targets 405 BMA schools and 10 vocational training schools, with the mission of improving student awareness of health risks associated with fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and translating this understanding into proactive policy decisions.

Schools across the city were assessed and ranked during the contest to crown the capital's top "dust crusaders." Among the winners, schools from six administrative clusters stood out, showcasing remarkable effort and commitment to the cause:
