The suspension of an 18-year-old student from Mueller College in Queensland, Australia has sparked a fury of controversy after she spoke out against the school's handling of a disturbing "rape list" scandal. Genevieve Dunstan, who was not involved in creating the list, was penalized for raising concerns over the school's response in a social media post. The incident has ignited a Change.org petition calling for her reinstatement, and it's raising questions about the school's priorities.
The drama began when a Courier Mail report shed light on a shocking incident at Mueller College. Six male students allegedly created and circulated a list on social media, labeling peers as potential targets for sexual assault. Disturbingly, it singled out eight students, some with disabilities, as "unrapeable." The list included explicit details and personal information about the targeted individuals.
When news of the list reached Finn Glover, 17, he decided to take action. Upon discovering the list, he reported it to the principal, expecting the perpetrators to be dealt with swiftly. Instead, he found himself expelled. Glover and his parents are outraged, asserting that sharing the list was supposed to help expose the issue, not exacerbate it.
Facing a sense of frustration, Dunstan felt compelled to speak out. In an Instagram post, she criticized the principal's decision as "absolutely pathetic." Shortly after, she was summoned for a meeting and asked to apologize for her remarks. Refusing to back down, Dunstan stood firm in her criticism, prompting an email informing her of her suspension. Now, she remains barred from campus, unable to attend her graduation or formal, though she is allowed to sit for her final exams.
"Why essentially expel someone for exposing people for creating a f**cking list of unrapeable people? I'm being treated like someone who created a f*cking list of unrapeable people," Dunstan stated.
While Mueller College's principal defended the school's actions, claiming all students involved were appropriately disciplined, the incident's critics argue that the school has failed to create a safe environment for students, one where they can report misconduct without fear of retaliation. with 770+ signatures, the Change.org petition demanding Dunstan's reinstatement calls for a change, not just at Mueller College, but in how schools handle crises like this.
Additionally, the incident has brought the issue of accountability within schools to the forefront of the public discourse, as critics voice their concerns and call for a change in the way sexual violence is addressed, both in schools and society at large. Statistics from the Australian Institute of Criminology suggest that 20% of Australians aged 18 to 45 have committed sexual violence since reaching adulthood in 2024.
The incident continues to unfold, with Dunstan facing an uncertain future at Mueller College. But the support for her and Glover underscores a growing demand for change-change that could ripple throughout the education system in Australia.
