In the heart of Düsseldorf's Düsseltal, a new artistic masterpiece has taken shape. The artwork, titled "Earth Is Blue," is a three-part, 91-meter-long fence sculpture, designed by artist Selma Gültoprak.

The artistic design implementation of "Earth Is Blue" was carried out by Düsseldorf blacksmith Pascal Reichert, who meticulously forged, bent, cut, and layered the individual elements in his workshop. The artwork features motifs and fragments from film scenes, interwoven in the form of stylized outlines.

The artwork is a tribute to the film classic "2001: A Space Odyssey" by Stanley Kubrick, and it offers a collage of landscape, technology, architecture, animals, and people as a series of motifs. Two-thirds of the artwork are already in place, with the final section to be installed in the spring of 2021.

"Earth Is Blue" was the winning design from the art-in-architecture competition launched by the interim art commission of the city of Düsseldorf. The project was the result of a municipal pilot project carried out in 2017, and it received a sum of 127,000 euros from the art commission's fund for its realization.

The district representation 2 and the Goethe-Gymnasium with the former Rethel Gymnasium also financially contributed to the complete three-part design implementation. The artwork is located at three points around the Goethe-Gymnasium.

The artwork invites one to walk around it, rather than separate or delimit. It serves as an enrichment for Düsseldorf and Flingern, according to Mayor Klaudia Zepuntke. "Earth Is Blue" is a connection of art, craftsmanship, and technology, with machine-cut metal and blacksmithing combined.

"Earth Is Blue" marks the first sculptural project result of the art commission of the city of Düsseldorf. The artwork was officially handed over to the school's leadership and students on September 7, 2020.

While detailed information about the background and significance of the project is limited, "Earth Is Blue" is undoubtedly a striking addition to the artistic landscape of Düsseldorf, offering a unique blend of art, craftsmanship, and technology that invites exploration and reflection.
