The application process for BAföG is often considered a bureaucratic marathon by students, requiring detailed income information from parents, tax returns, and insurance certificates. This complexity has been identified as the primary reason why more than half of the eligible German students do not apply for BAföG, with many finding the process overwhelming.
Alexander Eriksson, who conducted the research for his Master's degree in Economics at Lund University, suggests that simplifying the application process for BAföG could increase the number of students applying for state funding.
In Germany, several organisations and institutions offer support to students in navigating the complex BAföG application process. These include BAföG offices (Studentenwerke), large scholarship foundations funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) such as the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, and specialized foundations like the Otto-Benecke-Stiftung and Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, which also offer advisory and application support services for financial aid including BAföG and scholarships.
By streamlining the application process, more students could potentially benefit from the BAföG system, making higher education more accessible to a wider range of individuals. The study underscores the need for a more user-friendly application process, which could encourage more students to apply for state funding and pursue their academic goals.
