The upcoming Winter Semester 2025/26 at the University of Bremen will see a significant increase in semester fees, with students facing an increase of €77.90 compared to the previous semester. This rise is primarily due to an increase in mandatory components included in the semester fee package, as detailed below:

- Student Service: €130.00 (up from €85.00) - AStA Students' Union fee: €21.00 (remains unchanged) - Deutschlandsemesterticket (public transportation ticket in Germany): €208.80 (up from €176.40) - Kultursemesterticket (cultural ticket): €2.60 (up from €2.10) - Administrative fee: €63.00 (remains unchanged)

The total semester fee for Winter Semester 2025/26 is €425.40, a substantial jump from the €347.50 of previous semesters.

In response to this increase, the General Student Committee (AStA) at Bremen University is urging students to voice their discontent through protests and non-payment strategies. Meanwhile, the university suggests that the focus of protests and calls for change should be directed at the administrative board of the Student Union and the Bremen Ministry of Science.

The university acknowledges the concerns of students regarding the semester fee increase but has not indicated if it will take any action to address these concerns. It is important to note that the university does not have the authority to reverse the decisions regarding the semester fee increase as these are made by the administrative board of the Student Union and the Bremen Ministry of Science.

A group of students has threatened a complete boycott of semester fees in an open letter to the university, but the identity of the group remains unknown. The spokesperson for the University of Bremen states that an expulsion is not imminent at this point.

AStA has posted on Instagram, urging students to make a stand against the fee increase, stating that 425€ is too much. The committee has also stated that a protest against the fee increase is being called for.

If a student is on leave of absence due to military, voluntary service, illness, or parental leave, the fees are reduced by €85, and administrative fees may cease on a second consecutive leave.

For more detailed or recent information on student responses, checking the university's AStA (student union) or official communication channels is advisable.

In light of the significant increase in semester fees at the University of Bremen for Winter Semester 2025/26, students are being encouraged to voice their discontent through protests and non-payment strategies by the General Student Committee (AStA). These events are scheduled to take place in Bremerhaven, as education-and-self-development opportunities at this university are deeply impacted by the fee increase.
