Teachers now use openDesk to facilitate digital classrooms
The Zentrum für Digitale Souveränität der öffentlichen Verwaltung (ZenDiS), led by the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) in Germany, has driven the implementation of the Digital Workplace for Teachers (DAP) using openDesk since summer 2025. This shift signifies a substantial step in the platform's development, focusing on enhancing digital sovereignty and independence.
Initially, the DAP was based on the digitally sovereign software dPhoenix. The new software, openDesk, shares the same components as dPhoenix, ensuring a seamless transition for the approximately 60,000 teachers currently using the platform.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport oversees the Digital Education Platform (DAP) and SCHULE@BW, providing a contact form for citizen inquiries related to these platforms. Alongside other external parties like the Institute for Educational Analysis (IBBW), the Service Center School Administration (SCS), the Center for School Quality (ZSL), and the Digitization sector, they continue to support DAP and SCHULE@BW. The Press Office of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport handles inquiries related to these platforms.
State Secretary Sandra Boser, responsible for digitization, has highlighted that implementing the DAP with openDesk showcases the advantages of a modular approach and takes another stride towards greater digital sovereignty and independence.
During the transition to openDesk, teachers' email addresses and all emails and files will be retained. Initially, components like mailbox, calendar, tasks, contacts, and data storage will remain unchanged. The DAP will gradually be expanded with new features and tools.
The sectors involved in supporting DAP and SCHULE@BW are Education, Science, and School. The DAP, part of the Digital Education Platform SCHULE@BW, receives support from various external parties.
Since the current school year, the DAP has been implemented together with the Center for Digital Sovereignty (ZenDiS). Their collaboration aims to ensure the platform's continued success and growth, offering teachers a robust and secure digital workspace.
As the DAP and SCHULE@BW continue to evolve, they will benefit from the support of multiple external parties, securing a promising future for digital education in Germany.
