The bustling Asian island of Koh Samui is basking in the limelight as the stunning setting for the third season of HBO's smash-hit series, "The White Lotus." With its appearance on the small screen in late February, Thai tourism authorities, hotels, and travel agencies are all anticipating a historic surge of fans eager to explore the series' filming locations.

Notably, this isn't the first time "The White Lotus" has set travel trends awhirl. Previous seasons filmed in Hawaii and Sicily saw spikes in tourist arrival numbers at associated resorts, with the Four Seasons Resort Maui experiencing a staggering 400% increase in queries after the first season aired.

Thailand's tourism industry is bracing itself for a similar boom as Koh Samui, Phuket, and Bangkok's names grace the silver screen in this latest season. Chompu Marusachot, the New York office director of the Thai Tourism Authority (TAT), is optimistic that this White Lotus effect will bring the same surging interest the series has brought to its previous havens.

Online travel platforms like Expedia and Hotels.com have noticed the trend, with searches for Koh Samui skyrocketing following the official announcement of Thailand as the new location. It appears the German market is particularly drawn to Thailand's lure, according to the "Insider Travel Report."

However, Koh Samui's local residents express concerns about the impact of mass tourism on their rural paradise. With its limited water resources, inadequate waste management facilities, and traffic-clogged roads, the island's infrastructure is already strained. The addition of a sudden influx of visitors and wealthy vacationers could exacerbate these issues.

Back in the 1980s, Koh Samui remained an unspoiled tropical haven, known mainly to backpackers seeking secluded beaches, lush forests, and sparkling blue waters. Its expanding popularity saw the construction of an airport in 1989, and with it came an avalanche of visitors, boosting tourist numbers to 2.7 million people in 2021, with a local population of only 50,000.

As the buzz around "The White Lotus" fifth season reaches a fever pitch, hotels and tour operators are capitalizing on the opportunity by crafting special tours and packages for fans of the series. American Express offers the "White Lotus Thailand Experience," which includes a stay at the Four Seasons Koh Samui, luxury spa pampering, and gourmet dinners inspired by the show. Likewise, Bangkok's Four Seasons Hotel has introduced the "White Lotus Afternoon Tea."

The internet is filled with websites and resources catering to set jetters worldwide, from New Zealand's "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" locations to Dubrovnik, Croatia, home to "Game of Thrones." Thailand itself experienced a similar transformation in popularity 25 years ago with the release of Danny Boyle's "The Beach," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which subsequently drove hordes of visitors to Maya Bay in Koh Phi Phi.

The potentially heightened tourist traffic has become a topic of conversation among Koh Samui residents as they ponder the consequences of the White Lotus effect. One user expressed witnessing the gradual destruction of Thailand's resources and infrastructure by the tourism industry, while another criticized the mindset that places money above all else in Thailand.

With the series premiere underway, it remains to be seen how the Black Lotus effect will transform Koh Samui's landscape, but one thing is certain: tensions between the tourist-driven revenue boom and environmental sustainability will be at the forefront of the discussion in this exotic Hawaiian paradise.

The White Lotus' impact on Thailand extends beyond Koh Samui, as Bangkok also sees an increase in interest due to the series' filming locations. Many tourists are looking to explore these areas, hoping to recreate their favorite scenes from the show.

To cater to this demand, some hotels and tour operators in Bangkok have introduced White Lotus-themed experiences, like the White Lotus Afternoon Tea at the Four Seasons Hotel.

Understanding the potential impact of mass tourism on local resources, some Koh Samui residents express concerns about the strain on groundwater due to increased demand from visitors. They urge for sustainable tourism practices to preserve the island's natural beauty for future generations.
