Thousands of students rejoice at Summer Graduation Ceremony
In the historic city of Durham, thousands of students marked a significant milestone in their academic journey during the Summer Congregation 2024. The week-long series of graduation ceremonies, held at Durham Cathedral, recognised the achievements of students from 32 departments and 17 colleges across the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Business, and Faculty of Social Sciences and Health.
Over 6,000 Durham University students graduated, spanning from June 26 to July 3. The ceremonies were attended by over 17,000 guests, including Durham University's Chancellor, Dr Fiona Hill, and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Karen O'Brien.
Six individuals were honoured with honorary degrees for their significant contributions to their professional fields. Among them were botanist Dr Margaret Bradshaw MBE, journalist Hunter Davies OBE, human rights advocate Dr Dalee Sambo Dorough, computer scientist Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE, librarian Richard Ovenden OBE, and businessman James Timpson OBE.

In addition to the honorary degree recipients, eight individuals were honoured as celebrants during the Summer Congregation 2024, including Natasha Boulding and Douglas Halliday.
Natasha Boulding, co-founder of Low Carbon Materials, was a finalist in His Royal Highness Prince William's Earthshot Prize. Douglas Halliday, a former Professor of Physics, added another layer of academic prestige to the ceremonies.
