Trump Administration Dismisses Over 1,000 EPA Scientists

The Trump administration is set to dismiss over 1,000 scholars from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) research branch. This move, which goes against the EPA's mission, could shift policy influence towards corporate entities rather than scientific input.

The decision, made under President Trump and EPA administrator Lee Zeldin, is part of a broader plan to slash the EPA's budget by 65%. This follows the recent firing of hundreds of probationary workers, with most reinstated but placed on administrative leave.

The planned cuts include closing environmental justice offices, halting diversity initiatives, and terminating environmental grants. The Office of Research and Development, which ensures EPA rules are guided by independent research and backed by data, is also targeted. The Trump administration plans to dissolve this office and cut up to 75% of its workers.

Mary Grant of Food & Water Watch warns that even a smaller budget cut would have significant repercussions on public health and welfare. The EPA's ability to protect the environment and human health could be severely compromised by these planned firings and cuts.
