The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is gearing up for an exciting fall season, with a diverse range of performances and events scheduled throughout the quarter.
Kicking off the season is the much-anticipated launch of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance's new class in September 2025. Six selected jazz musicians will pursue Master of Music degrees under the artistic direction of Ambrose Akinmusire, with guest appearances from music legends such as Herbie Hancock, Herb Alpert, and Walter Smith III.
Musical highlights include the collaborative event "UCLA Phil Meets LA Phil" on October 26. This performance will feature works by Dukas, Rachmaninoff, and Strauss, and will showcase world-class student ensembles and special guest artists.
October will also see the presentation of "Louchitude, or Questionable Choices in Recent French Pop," an event scheduled for October 12, though specific details about this performance are not yet available.
November promises to be just as vibrant, with the world premiere of "David's Quilt" on November 5. This performance will showcase pieces by 15 Los Angeles-based composers. On November 6, the school will present "Inspired by Bach," featuring the world premiere of two new works by California-based composers.
The month will conclude with "Of Love and War" on November 30, an evening of choral music exploring the passion of love and duty, accompanied by a guitar quartet.
Throughout the season, guest artists and scholars will enrich the programme. Notable names include Placido Domingo, soprano Dawn Upshaw, Gabriela Lena Frank, Andrew McIntosh, Boris Allakhverdyan, Whitney Crockett, Ascendo3 Trio, Minneapolis Guitar Quartet, Joanna Demers, Mark Slobin, Apo Hsu, and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance Ensemble at UCLA.
