University of Toronto Brings Back Five-Day In-Person Work Week for Admin Staff

The University of Toronto is set to reintroduce a five-day in-person work week for many of its administrative staff across all three campuses. The change, planned to start in January, aims to foster face-to-face interaction among students, faculty, librarians, and staff. However, the move has sparked unease among union members and curiosity from students about its impact on services. United Steelworkers Local 1998, representing administrative and technical employees, has raised concerns about the lack of available space in some departments to accommodate the increased on-campus presence. The union also expressed members' confusion about the plan, as the notice did not specify a minimum number of days for on-campus work. The university has stated it will continue to consider alternative work arrangements, such as student loans assistance. This comes as several major banks in Toronto and Ontario public servants are also returning to offices with stricter mandates. Students have shown interest in understanding how this change might affect their access to in-person services, including student loans information. The University of Toronto's plan to bring back a five-day in-person work week for administrative staff is expected to begin in January, or sooner in some cases. While the university considers alternative arrangements, the union and students await clarification on the new policies and their potential impacts on student loans.
