Velbert Launches Pilot Project to Combat Childcare Staff Shortages
Velbert has launched a nationwide pilot project to tackle staff shortages in its municipal childcare facilities. The project, initiated on September 15, 2025, involves the deployment of a substitute pool of social pedagogical specialists. This pool, currently consisting of four specialists, is provided by P_WERK and is available at short notice to complement providers' own measures.
The substitute pool is a response to illness-related absences that have led to restrictions or closures in individual facilities. Social affairs commissioner Sandra Ernst emphasizes the importance of reliable care for the children. The pilot project is initially designed for five months, with the possibility of extension. Velbert has around 3,000 children attending 50 daycare centers, making the substitute pool a crucial initiative to ensure smooth operation of these facilities.
