Billionaire Plattner's Bankroll for Potsdam's AI Boom and Campus Development

Let's cut to the chase!
Software magnate Hasso Plattner is set to inject a fortune into supercharging Germany's AI game and bolster Potsdam's research scene. His foundation plans to bankroll a brand-new university campus by 2035, with the Hasso Plattner Institute in town also receiving a major expansion.
"We aim to become one of Germany's top computer science powerhouses," Plattner declared at Potsdam University. He didn't toss around exact figures, but hinted at a hefty three-digit number. Regarding his Hasso Plattner Foundation, he simply said, "Whatever it costs, we'll foot the bill."
This 81-year-old co-founder of the software giant SAP has been a staunch supporter of science and arts for quite some time now. In Potsdam, his credentials include the Museum Barberini, showcasing a sizable collection of Impressionist art, and supporting the restoration of the city palace, now home to the state parliament.
State Minister-President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) foresees positive vibes for the entire region. "The economy of Brandenburg and Berlin will thrive from this move." To bring these plans to fruition, a joint task force will be spawned, with Woidke and Plattner at the helm.
In the next five years:
- The prime Brauhausberg location in Potsdam will transform into a cutting-edge university campus, spanning several modern edifices. The goal? A fresh home for Potsdam University boasting 5,000 to 6,000 students, with law and social sciences relocating from the Campus Griebnitzsee.
- University chief Oliver Günther is excited about the prospective university campus: "This'll be a flagship project!" Nearby, world-class research institutions like the GFZ and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research reside on the Telegrafenberg.
Plattner's sights are set on AI research
A historic opportunity for a significant leap in AI research lies ahead, according to Plattner. His IT research institution at Griebnitzsee stands to add a lot more space as a result of the university faculties migrating to the Brauhausberg. The student body looks set to double to about 2,000.
No tuition? You heard it! The gift of free education continues. Plattner emphasized, "No tuition fees here, folks! Keep learning in a constantly improving environment." He panned the USA's troubles under President Donald Trump's administration, which is stirring up a mess in academia. He yearns for more foreign professors to join his institute in the future.
The US government's pushing in education policy could scare off foreign students and professors. It's trying to bar elite university Harvard from accepting international students, and is sowing doubt with potential visa restrictions.
Plattner's long-held wish to establish his own university has finally materialized, he said, praising the coordinated efforts of the country, city, and his foundation. The trio hopes that construction begins ASAP, as the press release suggests.
In the early 2010s, Brauhausberg went through a rough patch. The rundown listed building that once housed the Brandenburg state parliament had succumbed to fire and decay since 2013. In the GDR days, it was the SED district headquarters, hence the nickname "Kremlin." A Berlin real estate company had snapped up the area years ago but failed to act on planned renovations.
