Standing for Democracy: Alfons Empowers the Next Generation
Youth Denied Voice in Democracy, Says Alfons on His Advocacy Mission - Youths lack exposure: Alfons embarks on democracy outreach session
Emmanuel Peterfalvi, better recognized as comedian Alfons, sheds light on a communicative gap in democratic education. Youth are deeply interested in the discussion, but feel unheard, he shared with the German Press Agency while preparing for performances in Saxony. "Nobody wants to admit it, but they often feel brushed off when adults tell them they're too young or lack experience. And that's a real shame," he admitted.
Through his stage show "Alfons - now even more German," he introduces the heartwarming narrative of his Jewish grandmother who survived Auschwitz, as well as a thought-provoking account of his decision to become German. These anecdotes resonate deeply with the youth, paving the way for open dialogue.
In his interactive workshop the following day, Alfons encourages the young people to share their thoughts. Some are already passionately advocating for democracy, while others question its necessity. Conversations revolve around standing up for one's beliefs, listening, understanding, arguing, and embracing diversity – core values of democracy.
Navigating difficult discussions can be challenging, Alfons acknowledges, admitting that not every attempt is successful. "Fortunately, we have tools like social media now, where we can discuss and share ideas on a wider scale," he said. "Democracy education and media literacy are now more important than ever in schools."
Aware of the urgent need for action, Alfons draws inspiration from Holocaust survivor Simon Wiesenthal. He reminds audiences that "it's crucial to do something, as it's a dangerous time, and something might slip away." In honor of his grandmother, Peterfalvi founded a foundation to continue her work promoting inter-cultural understanding through education.
Schools across Saxony benefit from discounted tickets to his autobiographical theater piece. Seeking financial support and partnerships, he aspires to make his projects more accessible to young people. Support from the Cellex Foundation and the State Center for Political Education in Saxony underpins his efforts in fostering a new generation of democrats and ethical citizens.
Although information on Alfons' specific initiatives is limited, general initiatives aiming at integrating democracy education into school curricula exist in countries like Albania. A recent law revision in Albania, heavily influenced by the input of young people, focuses on empowering the youth through participatory policymaking and promoting youth rights[1].
Democracy education is essential for developing informed and engaged citizens of the future[2]. Incorporating honest discussions and interactive workshops into the education system can empower the youth to make informed decisions, embrace diversity, and take an active role in their communities and the democratic process.
- In the interactive workshop following his stage show, Alfons promotes discussions that revolve around lifestyle, personal growth, education, and self-development, including the importance of vocational training, which he believes can help young people find their voice in the fashion-and-beauty industry or other fields, contributing to their overall development and active participation in the community.
- Recognizing the significant influence of technology in today's society, Alfons advocates for the integration of digital literacy and media education into vocational training programs to equip the next generation with the skills necessary to navigate online discourse effectively, fostering their ability to impact the fashion-and-beauty industry or other sectors while promoting democratic values and social change.
